Qualifications and Requirements for PMP Certification Examination

One of the biggest steps in your career will include having a PMP certification, a sought after validation of your managerial skills. This certification will make you a valuable employee to the current employer and to future clients in addition to helping you acquire skills and tools for better managing projects.

According to numerous polls conducted, PMP certification is amongst one of the top credentials within the IT industry. This internationally validated certification is a proof of your capabilities and knowledge in the project management industry. Although it does not mitigate the academic qualifications that you have, it does add an extra validation and is sought after in the project management industry. Most of the employers are on a constant lookout for people who need minimum supervision and can lead a project responsibly helping increase productivity and lower company costs. Some of the misconceptions about the certification include that it is yet another piece of paper to hand on the wall alongside the other academic certifications but that is a myth. PMP certification is a real time learning and implementation knowledge that provides innumerable tools and techniques for better project management. Project management experts' stress on the importance of this certification in this industry and recommends this credential to those involved in management of projects.

However, not everyone qualifies for the elite PMP certification and there are required parameters that need to be considered. It is more complicated than just sitting for an exam and qualifying. The three broad parameters include educational background, project management education and experience of project management.

With high school diploma or an associate degree, you need a minimum of five years project management experience with over 7,500 hours of directing and managing projects. Additionally, with a regular graduate degree of 4 years, you need to be working on directing projects for at least 3 years and have logged in 4,500 hours on leading project tasks. In addition you need to have 35 contract hours of formal education in both the above mentioned scenarios. The verification of the qualifications and experience is done online after the submission of the completed forms at the PMI website.

The PMP guidebook ascertains that you need to have gained project management experience within 8 years of applying for the said exam. A minimum of 5 projects where you need to have initiated, directed, monitored and closed the projects.
