PacX Wave Gliders, robot laut yang dikembangkan oleh Liquid Robot, perusahaan robot yang berbasis di California, berhasil memecahkan rekor sebagai robot laut yang mampu menempuh perjalanan terjauh.

PacX yang didayai oleh gelombang laut berhasil menempuh perjalanan sejauh 3200 mil laut dari Pantai Barat di Amerika Serikat menuju Hawaii di Pasifik.

"Kami bangga PacX Wave Gliders kami berhasil mencapai tujuan pertama mereka dan memecahkan rekor dunia," ungkap Edward Lu, Chief of Innovative Application di Liquid Robotics.

Seperti dikutip Livescience, Selasa (13/3/2012), Lu menuturkan bahwa PacX mencerminkan robot masa depan yang mampu melakukan pemantauan lingkungan laut secara autonom di wilayah yang sulit dijangkau.

PacX memiliki perangkat yang mampu mengubah gelombang laut menjadi gaya untuk memungkinkannya bergerak maju. Ini membuatnya bergerak ribuan mil tanpa bahan bakar dalam misi yang berlangsung tahunan.

Jarak yang ditempuh PacX kini belum seberapa. Robot laut ini ditargetkan akan menuju Jepang dan Australia melewati Palung Mariana, titik terdalam di dunia. Total jarak yang ditempuh nantinya sekitar 9000 mil laut.

Robot ini diperkirakan akan sampai mencapai targetnya pada akhir 2012 atau awal 2013. Nantinya, robot juga diharapkan bisa memantau pengasaman lautan, perikanan maupun bahaya tsunami.

"Gen Tidur" Tumbuhan Terungkap

Ilmuwan berhasil mengungkap gen yang berperan mengatur dormansi pada malam hari serta mengontrol perbungaan pada tanaman selada (Lactuca sativa).

Berdasarkan pemodelan komputer yang dilakukan, ilmuwan mengungkap bagaimana 12 gen bekerjasama mengatur jam biologis pada tanaman selada, termasuk masa dormansi.

Andrew Millar, profesor biologi molekuler di Universitas Edinburgh mengungkapkan bahwa protein TOC1 yang berperan membangunkan tumbuhan di pagi hari ternyata juga berperan menidurkan tumbuhan.

Millar yang menjadi pimpinan proyek penelitian ini mengungkapkan bahwa protein tersebut membantu menonaktifkan gen-gen yang berperan dalam aktivitas tumbuhan di siang hari.

Hasil penemuan ini dipublikasikan di Molecular System Biology. Riset akan memacu pemahaman tentang jam biologis tumbuhan lain, terutama tanaman gandum, barley dan padi.

Millar mengungkapkan bahwa tumbuhan juga memiliki jam biologis, sama seperti manusia. Jam biologis membantu tumbuhan menyiapkan aktivitas pada siang hari dan menyimpan energi pada malam hari.

Millar mengungkapkan, pemahaman jam biologis tumbuhan juga penting. "Ini berguna dan juga penting dalam sudut pandang biologi dan perbungaan," kata Millar.

Pi alias 3,14 sudah tak asing. Hampir setiap orang pernah memakainya, setidaknya semasa sekolah untuk menghitung luas lingkaran atau volume bola.

Meski demikian, tak banyak yang tahu tentang Pi, proses penemuannya hingga misteri yang sampai sekarang belum terpecahkan. Banyak yang cuma menggunakan atau menghafalkannya, tanpa memaknai.

Rabu (14/3/2012) adalah waktu yang tepat untuk mengenal Pi. 14 Maret selalu diperingati sebagai Pi Day. Tanggal ini dipilih sebab dalam format penulisan bulan/tanggal (3/14) tepat merepresentasikan Pi.

Pi telah dikenal selama 4000 tahun. Pi merepresentasikan hubungan antara keliling dan diameter lingkaran. Meski demikian, belum diketahui siapa yang sebenarnya menemukan Pi.

Angka Pi yang dikenal saat ini, 3,14, adalah pembulatan. Sebenarnya, angka Pi adalah 3,141592653.... Ujung Pi, alias angka desimal dari Pi belum ditemukan.

Perlombaan menemukan Pi yang seakurat mungkin alias sebanyak-banyaknya angka di belakang koma dalam Pi adalah salah satu yang menarik untuk diamati.

Masyarakat Babilonia yang melakukan penghitungan menyebutkan bahwa angka Pi adalah sedikit lebih besar dari 3. Besarnya kira-kira 3 1/8 atau 3,125.

Hingga kini, ujung dari Pi belum ditemukan. Bahkan, Pi mungkin tak memiliki ujung. Satu per satu rekor penghitungan Pi akan terkalahkan seiring waktu.

Sementara Pi masih digemari dan berbagai kalangan, kini dikenal Tau. Nilai Tau adalah 2 kali Pi, alias sekitar 6,28. Bilangan ini mulai dikenalkan sejak tahun 2001 dan mulai mendapat banyak dukungan.

Tau dianggap memiliki kelebihan dibanding Pi. Salah satunya, Tau dianggap lebih mudah dipahami dibanding Pi sehingga membantu awam dalam memahaminya.
