Everything You Need To Know About Morse Code

The term Morse Code is the name given to the means of communication in which tones, flashes of light or a series of clicks are used to convey a whole message from one sender to any number of receivers on the other end of the communication. In English language for example, every character is represented and is used in the same way as in writing.

The method is also known as the International Morse system, in which all the Roman characters and numerals, The English language characters and Arabic numerals are all included in this design. It may be subject to extension or contractions when communicating in different languages, French for example cannot be the same as English.

In this method, the different characters and words are separated using dots and dashes. Depending on the word being written, the different characters form sentences which vary extremely in length. This is caused by the number of dots and dashes included in writing.

Speed in which the text or tones are created and transmitted can be measured. The measurement is in words per minute and the means of measuring this speed is licensed by government institutions like the Federal Communication Commission in the USA. It is done by measuring the speed in which the certain specific words are written, the word Paris being such an examples.

The most important feature when looking at the design of this system is in the clever coding efficiency incorporated in it. This simply means that there is inverse proportionality between the length of the word and its frequency of usage. The letter e for example, is the most frequently occurring character in English language and the shortest in system, consisting of only a dot.

Morse Code is extremely easy to transmit since it requires no decoder. Light and clicks are limited in their capability to be sent over long distances. Tones however, being sound, can be transmitted using radio waves over long distances instead of speech to any part of the world.
