We all know about what it's like to wear uncomfortable or ill-fitting clothes, or worse still, to be out somewhere and see a person wearing the same outfit. Once you create your own clothes this won't be a problem!

Whether you are an accomplished dressmaker or a novice, a dressmaker's mannequin is crucial. While creating clothes may seem uncomplicated if you use a pattern, no-one's shape is the same, and the only way you can be assured that the garment will fit like a glove is if you use a dressmaker's dummy. It allows you to make an outfit that is customized for someone, taking into account particular measurements. Not everyone's body meets what are considered 'industry standards', and a perfect fit can only be achieved if you take advantage of a dressmaker's mannequin.

Making alterations is also easy to do. It's time-consuming and taxing to try to change an outfit on a flat paper pattern - it takes way too long to get the measurements and then alter the outline of the outfit. With a dressmaker's dummy, you can just use pins to attach the outfit in the correct place, and then switch things up think it's necessary. Also, being able to visualize the completed outfit on the dummy allows you to think about a few distinctive touches that you may not have thought of otherwise.

A dressmaker's mannequin is really helpful when you want to observe just how the material will fall. This changes according to the how much your fabric weighs, and you will only know this if you use a 3-D. You will be able to to drape the material until you reach the shape that you want. This pertains to both a heavy fabric such as velvet or something flimsy like gauze. A swing dress, gossamer thin blouse or long column dress can only be pit together correctly using a dummy.

If you are creating a unique outfit for someone, it's not a good idea to have them come in for multiple fittings. Take their initial measurements, then use the dummy for fitting until you have a garment that they can actually try on. No-one likes getting stuck with pins!

There are differing types of of dummies, ranging from a modest cost to quite expensive. They can be made out of wire, foam or plastic. The adjustable form has dials around the hips, waist and bust, allowing you to create a perfect fit according to your client. A foam dummy is particularly useful due to the fact that you can pin the material right on to the form, and even iron the outfit when it is in place. It will have a waistline that can not only be expanded, but also lengthened, and will also take into account a person's height. This is suitable for a person with a large bust compared to small hips and vice versa. This kind of dressmaker dummy runs at approximately 70 - 150. A form that isn't adjustable is usually available in a standard size (for example 8,10,12 and upwards). This is perfect if you have what is considered a standard shape for your size. The most expensive type of dressmaker's dummy is a professional form. This won't be really suitable for someone who makes clothes as a hobby or a small business as it only conforms to what is considered the 'industry standard'. (This is why designer clothing doesn't tend to correspond with normal size! Expect to pay about 250-500.

Whichever type of dressmaker's dummy you you need, no matter what your skill level, producing amazing outfits will be so much easier. Release your inner dress designer!
