Plenty of folk are terrified of talking up when they see something illegal taking place at work because they are afraid of retaliation. Many of us can't stand to lose our job, even if it suggests doing the decent thing.

But fear not as there are laws that protect whistleblowers from firing and retaliation. Here are something things which will likely occur if you report unlawful activity at your job to the government:

Talking with the whistleblower

It will likely be vital for the company to touch base with the whistleblower as soon as possible after the event. The explanation for this is it's always best to stay amicable. The company would want to assure them that no retaliation will happen and that they are glad that they bought the problem to the attention of the company. It is also judicious to give the whistleblower a point of contact should they have any concerns or questions about the case.

Caution is vital here because if the whistleblower believes they are being overlooked or that their complaint isn't being taken sufficiently seriously then they are as certain to complain to the SEC about retaliation.

Communication Channels

Even during and following the event it will likely be crucial to the company to keep communication paths open. Whistleblower rules make it clear that if a worker is treated differently in any fashion that could be assumed as being related to the event, then they'll have grounds for recourse. It also tells the whistleblower that their company takes anti-retaliation policies seriously indeed.

No Retaliatory Behaviour

If your company hears of any behaviour that suggests retaliation toward a whistleblower then it must be dealt with fast. It is generally best to recommend the worker the situation has been resolved and that it won't occur again. It may mean that they have to transfer a supervisor out of the whistleblower's office so as to resolve the situation. Don't forget that if a company is thinking about transferring the whistleblower from the office, then they run the risk of the individual thinking that they're being victimised.
