The Use Of Tubular Membrane In The Purification Of Liquids

The tubular membrane technology is gradually becoming popular amongst liquid purification plants all over the world. The membranes used in this process are very thin films with porous surfaces which act as sieves. These films are incorporated into pipes to come up with a tube of 15 mm in diameter.

This technology has been widely applied in the purification of liquids especially water for domestic consumption. The separation does need the use of chemicals and uses extremely low energy. Safe water has since been achieved form surface water, ground water and wastewater using this technology which is also easy to understand.

The process is quite simple; the film is semi permeable and this means that it selectively allows substances to penetrate through it. In water purification, it only allows water particles to pass through it and restrains every other suspension that may be in the water. However, the water must be forced through its pores and this may be achieved through various processes.

One of such processes is the subjection of the liquid to relatively high pressure. When the pressure is increased from inside the film, water will be forced out leaving residue behind. The resultant of this is clean and clear safe-to-drink water.

Osmosis may also be used to meet this. This is the variation of substrate concentration of either sides of the film. This then creates a concentration gradient which draws water particles from the region where they are highly concentrated to where their concentration is low. This is better understood by understanding how terrestrial plants absorb their water from the ground without taking in soil particles since it is the same process.

Treating water by using tubular membrane results to safe water since harmful chemicals are not used. This process is also efficient as it may be applied to very cold water unlike the use of chemicals.
